Partnership embraces neurodiverse skills

Survey Management Solutions is dedicated to providing opportunities for people in the communities within which we work.

Giving back to the community is how SMS leaves its footprint, which is why we are proud of our relationship with Australian Spatial Analytics (ASA) working together on one of Melbourne’s major roads projects, the Lathams Road Upgrade project in Carrum Downs.

ASA is a registered not-for-profit social enterprise that trains and employs neurodiverse adults to conduct professional data analytics services.

Their core mission is to leverage data to employ diversity – with over 80 per cent of the organisation’s workforce consisting of people with a disability, namely autism spectrum disorder and ADHD.

SMS teamed up with ASA to undertake the compliance surveys for the project, essential work that helped keep the upgrade on track.

“Working on Lathams Road was our first project in Victoria and our engagement with SMS has been a real partnership,” said ASA’s CEO, Geoffrey Smith.

“They facilitated several site visits that served as on the job training and gave our analysts access to accredited professional development opportunities.”

People with a disability experience significant barriers to employment, , so the partnership with SMS was an important opportunity to highlight how people with a disability can add value and make a positive difference in surveying. By partnering with a social enterprise like ASA, the construction industry can mitigate some of their pipeline challenges and create an opportunity for skilled individuals who might otherwise be at risk of unemployment.
