SMS drones track quarry’s transformation

How do you measure enough dirt to fill the MCG playing surface 50m high?

Lots of drone flights.

Survey Management Solutions has been tracking the fill placed at Gen Fyansford estate in Geelong since 2017.

This is turning an old quarry in Geelong, into the city’s largest infill estate, to provide about 1200 homes, playgrounds, parks, and a town centre upon completion.

SMS has flown drone missions across the site at least monthly since the start of the project, with the data used to accurately track the total amount of earthworks completed on site.

This allows the project team to calculate volumes of stockpiles and provide earthworks progress updates and progress imagery to clients using Propeller, a web-based tool that takes the complexity out of data capture and gives users valuable info in a user-friendly platform.
